6-Day Tsavo East & West Safari

About This Tour

Tsavo is Kenya's largest protected area — bigger than the Maasai Mara and Amboseli combined — and among its least crowded major parks. This 6-day trip covers both halves: Tsavo East's open plains and famous 'red elephants', dusted red by the park's volcanic soil, and Tsavo West's more dramatic terrain, including the crystal-clear Mzima Springs and the Lugard Falls on the Galana River.

Route & Location

Nairobi to Tsavo East National Park, Kenya

Best Time to Go

June–October and January–February (dry season), when wildlife concentrates around Tsavo's rivers and waterholes.

Itinerary

Depart Nairobi (or Mombasa, on request) for Tsavo East, arriving for lunch and an afternoon game drive across the park's wide-open plains — look for Tsavo's famous red-dust elephants.

A full day exploring Tsavo East, including the Lugard Falls and the Galana River, plus the park's fenced rhino sanctuary if you'd like the best odds of a rhino sighting.

Morning game drive followed by transfer to Tsavo West, entering by early afternoon for your first game drive across noticeably more dramatic, hillier terrain.

A full day in Tsavo West, visiting Mzima Springs' underwater viewing chamber (hippo and fish, water levels permitting) and the volcanic Chaimu Crater.

Continued exploration of Tsavo West's varied habitat, tracking lion, buffalo, cheetah and the park's substantial elephant population.

A last game drive at dawn, then breakfast, check-out and the drive back to Nairobi (or Mombasa).

Tsavo East is flatter and more open, known for its red elephants and the Galana River; Tsavo West is hillier and more scenic, with Mzima Springs, volcanic landscapes and denser vegetation.

Yes — Tsavo sits roughly between the two, so this itinerary works equally well starting or ending in Mombasa, useful if you're combining it with a coastal stay.
