Local 5 days Maasai Mara, Kenya

5-Day Great Migration River Crossing Safari

About This Tour

Witness one of the most powerful wildlife events on earth — the Great Migration river crossing at the Mara River. Between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebra and Thomson's gazelle surge across the crocodile-infested Mara River in a desperate bid for fresh pasture. The thundering hooves, the surging water, the waiting crocodiles — it is raw, unscripted nature at its most dramatic. Your expert guide Martin Kioko positions your vehicle at the optimal crossing points identified through years of migration tracking. Five days gives you multiple crossing opportunities, full Big Five game drives across both the main Mara and the Mara Triangle, a sunrise hot air balloon option, and a sunset visit to an authentic Maasai village. This is the safari bucket-list experience — and July to October is the only window to witness it.

Itinerary

Depart Nairobi at 06:00 in your private Land Cruiser. The route crosses the dramatic Great Rift Valley escarpment — your first photographic opportunity of the trip. Stop at a Rift Valley viewpoint for tea and biscuits before descending into the Mara ecosystem. Arrive at camp by 12:30 for lunch and check-in. After a short rest, your first afternoon game drive begins at 15:30 — the golden hours when lions stir from shade and cheetahs scan open plains from termite mounds. The Mara River is your first stop: crocodiles, hippos and the first signs of wildebeest herds building along the bank. Return to camp for a fireside dinner and a briefing from your guide on tomorrow's migration strategy.

Pre-dawn departure at 05:30 — the most productive window for predator activity. Lions are often still with their kills as dawn breaks, and leopards return to tree-cached prey before full light. Breakfast in the bush under an acacia tree. Morning session continues deep into the Mara Triangle, the least-visited and most pristine section of the reserve. Elephant herds move between Musiara Marsh and the open plains — encounters of 50 to 100 elephants are common. Afternoon: track the resident cheetah coalition — a pair of brothers known in this area for cooperative hunting. Sundowner drinks at a Rift Valley escarpment viewpoint. The guide confirms crossing intelligence for Day 3 based on wildebeest herd movements tracked via radio with other guides.

This is the day. Depart camp at 05:00 with packed breakfast. Your guide positions you at the pre-identified crossing point — arrival timing is critical. The wildebeest herd builds on the northern bank over one to three hours, nervous, circling, testing the water. Then the first animal commits — and the surge begins. Thousands of animals pour into the river at once. Crocodiles explode from the water. The sound is overwhelming. You will photograph, you will film, you will simply stare in disbelief. Multiple crossing attempts can happen in a single morning. Lunch on the river bank. Afternoon game drive across the Mara Triangle with views toward the Tanzanian border and the Serengeti plains. Return to camp emotionally full. Dinner and debrief around the fire.

Optional: pre-book a hot air balloon safari departing at 06:00 (approx $450 per person, not included — book in advance). Float silently above the Mara plains as sunrise turns the savannah gold, spotting wildlife from above — a completely different perspective. Champagne bush breakfast follows landing. For non-balloon guests: morning game drive focused on the Talek River area, excellent for leopard sightings in the fig trees. Afternoon at leisure — swim, journal, rest in the shade. At 16:30 visit an authentic Maasai boma: meet the Enkiama elder, watch the warriors' jumping ceremony (adumu), learn about traditional medicine and buy locally made beadwork directly from the artisans. A portion of your visit fee goes to community education.

Your last morning drive departs at 05:45 — guides always save the best crossing spots for the final day. One more search for the resident leopard. One more lion pride at rest. One more sunrise over Africa's greatest wilderness. Brunch at camp at 09:30, followed by a heartfelt farewell from your camp team and departure for Nairobi at 11:00. The 5-hour drive back gives you time to sort through thousands of photographs. Arrive Nairobi 16:00 to 17:00. Drop-off at your hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The Mara stays with you long after you leave.
