Local 3 days Amboseli, Kenya

3-Day Amboseli & Kilimanjaro Views Safari

About This Tour

Stand at the foot of Africa's highest mountain and watch hundreds of elephants drift across the plains beneath its snow-capped peak. The photograph you have seen a thousand times — enormous elephant bulls silhouetted against Kilimanjaro — is real, and Amboseli National Park is the only place on earth to witness it. Amboseli is home to one of Africa's most studied and habituated elephant populations — over 1,600 elephants roam the park, including several multi-generational matriarchal families known by name to researchers since the 1970s. Your guide will introduce you to specific family groups and their stories. Alongside the elephants: lion prides hunting the open plains, cheetah families on the short-grass, giraffe against the mountain, and the spectacular Amboseli wetlands fed by underground streams from Kilimanjaro's glaciers. Three perfect days — ideal as a standalone Kenya safari or combined with Maasai Mara for the ultimate Kenya experience.

Itinerary

Depart Nairobi at 07:00 via the Namanga road, passing through sweeping Rift Valley scenery and small Maasai market towns. As you enter the Amboseli ecosystem the landscape shifts — yellow fever acacia woodland gives way to open short-grass plains. Your first elephant sighting often happens before you even reach the gate. Check in to camp by 13:00. After lunch, your afternoon game drive heads toward the Amboseli wetlands — Enkiongo Narok and Longinye swamps, fed year-round by underground water from Kilimanjaro. Hundreds of elephants gather here at dusk. Watch massive bull elephants emerge from papyrus reeds, waterbirds launch into the pink sky, and if you are fortunate, Kilimanjaro clears of cloud at golden hour for the shot of a lifetime.

Rise at 05:30 for the best Kilimanjaro light — the mountain is often clearest in the early morning before clouds build mid-day. Your guide takes you to the classic viewpoints: Observation Hill at sunrise gives a 360-degree panorama of the park, the mountain and the elephant-dotted plains below. Photograph the iconic silhouette — elephant and Kilimanjaro — that has defined Kenya's safari image worldwide. Mid-morning: track lion prides that hunt the open Amboseli plains. Cheetah families with cubs are regularly spotted on the short-grass. Lunch at camp or a shaded picnic spot. Afternoon game drive explores the northern Amboseli plains and the seasonal lake bed — thousands of flamingos gather here after rainfall. Buffalo herds, giraffe and zebra complete the plains panorama. Evening drinks watching the mountain turn from white to gold to pink as the sun sets.

One final early morning game drive at 05:45 — the elephants are at the swamp edges as the sun rises behind Kilimanjaro. Your guide knows the matriarchal families by name; he will introduce you to the individuals you photographed yesterday by their family histories and personalities. A last search for predators on the morning hunt. Return to camp for a full brunch at 09:30 — a proper send-off meal. Depart Amboseli at 11:00 for the return drive to Nairobi, arriving 15:30 to 16:00. Drop-off at your city hotel or JKIA airport. Already planning your next safari before you land.
