Kenya Safari Packing List: What to Bring (and What to Leave Behind)

Pack smart, not heavy. A well-planned bag makes every game drive more comfortable and every photo sharper. Here's our definitive packing list for a Kenya safari.

Over-packing is the number one mistake first-time safari travellers make. Bush aircraft have strict luggage limits (typically 15kg in a soft bag), and you'll be living out of a bag for days. Here's what actually matters.

Clothing

  1. Neutral colours: Khaki, olive, tan, brown. Avoid white (dust) and bright colours (can disturb wildlife and other guests).
  2. Layers: Early morning game drives can be surprisingly cold even in summer. A fleece or lightweight down jacket is essential.
  3. Long sleeves and trousers: For sun protection, cool evenings, and tsetse fly deterrence in some areas.
  4. Comfortable walking shoes and sandals for the camp.
  5. Wide-brimmed hat — non-negotiable.

Photography

  1. A camera with a zoom lens of at least 300mm for wildlife shots.
  2. Extra memory cards and batteries — power outlets in the bush are not always reliable.
  3. A beanbag or window mount for stabilising shots from a vehicle.
  4. Lens cleaning cloth — dust is everywhere.

Health and Comfort

  1. High-SPF sunscreen and lip balm.
  2. Insect repellent with DEET (especially if visiting between April and November).
  3. Anti-malaria medication (consult your doctor before travel).
  4. Personal first aid kit — blister plasters, rehydration sachets, antihistamine.
  5. Binoculars — 8x42 or 10x42 are ideal for game viewing.

What to Leave Behind

  1. Hard-shell suitcases (not allowed on bush aircraft).
  2. Camouflage clothing (illegal in several East African countries).
  3. Excessive jewellery.
  4. Heavy perfume or cologne (can disturb wildlife on walking safaris).
