The term "Big Five" was coined by big-game hunters to describe the five most difficult animals to hunt on foot. Today it describes the five most sought-after animals on any African safari — and Kenya is one of the best places on earth to see all of them.
1. African Lion
Kenya's lion population is concentrated in the Masai Mara, Amboseli, and Tsavo. Lions are the most social of the big cats — you'll often spot them in prides of 10–15 animals. The Mara is famous for its large, dark-maned males. Twilight drives offer the best viewing as lions become active at dusk.
2. African Elephant
Amboseli National Park offers arguably the world's best elephant viewing, with over 1,600 elephants roaming beneath the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. Tsavo East and Tsavo West also host massive herds. Elephants are highly intelligent and deeply social — watching a family group interact is one of the most moving safari experiences.
3. Leopard
The most elusive of the Big Five, leopards are masters of camouflage and primarily nocturnal. Your best chance is in the Masai Mara, Samburu, or the Laikipia plateau. Look up — leopards frequently rest in acacia trees with their kills, using height to keep them safe from lions and hyenas.
4. African Buffalo
Often underestimated, the Cape buffalo is considered by many guides to be the most dangerous of the Big Five. They move in herds of hundreds and have an unpredictable temperament. Old bulls — known as "dagga boys" — live alone or in small groups and are particularly formidable.
5. Black Rhinoceros
Kenya's rhino conservation story is one of Africa's greatest comebacks. From near-extinction in the 1980s, numbers have grown steadily through the work of organisations like Ol Pejeta Conservancy, which protects the world's last two northern white rhinos alongside a healthy black rhino population.
